Welcome to Singapore – Singapore offers a unique mix of culture, cuisine, and experiences within a small area. Skyscrapers tower over historic shophouses, luxury malls sit next to bustling outdoor markets, and traditional temples neighbor popular tourist attractions. I recently spent a week exploring this vibrant city-state and want to share my favorite finds. With so much to see and do, get ready for a whirlwind tour of the top 8 attractions and neighborhoods in Singapore!
1. Marina Bay & Gardens by the Bay
This iconic area is home to the three-towered Marina Bay Sands hotel and casino, which looks like a ship docked along the waterfront. Take a stroll along the promenade then head into the fantastical Gardens by the Bay next door. Here you’ll be wowed by the enormous Supertrees – vertical gardens over 150 feet tall! – and get lost wandering through flower domes and cloud forests housed in giant climate-controlled conservatories. The amazing views and Instagram-worthy spots make this a must-see. And don’t miss the spectacular light show on the Supertrees at night!

2. Clarke Quay & Boat Quay
These bustling riverside neighborhoods are packed with busy restaurants, trendy bars, and colorful shophouses. I loved strolling along the water taking in street performances and lively nightlife scenes as partygoers hopped between floating barge clubs. History buffs can visit the excellent Asian Civilisations Museum housed in an old colonial building along the river. And be sure to take a relaxing river cruise for gorgeous city vista views!

3. Little India & Arab Street
Singapore’s Indian and Malay communities converge in these vibrant enclaves filled with the sights and smells from spice markets, flower garland shops, curry houses, and mosques. I suggest wandering aimlessly past old shophouses while soaking in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Make sure to stop for an authentic banana leaf meal at a no-frills Indian restaurant or sample heavenly baklava along Arab Street. The East meets West culture mashup is incredible!

4. Singapore Botanic Gardens
For an urban jungle escape, spend the afternoon exploring Singapore’s gorgeous botanical gardens established over 150 years ago by British colonists. Originally a place to test crops like rubber, the gardens now contain the largest orchid collection in the world with over 1,000 species! Other highlights are the rainforest-like Swan Lake, ancient trees, and tranquil nooks perfect for a picnic. On weekends, locate a spot on the lawn for lazy people watching. Before you leave, make a wish at the Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore’s national flower.

5. Sentosa Island
This popular resort island offers fun in the sun for the whole family. My top pick is tackling the outdoor obstacle courses high in the jungle canopy at the TreeTop Walk. Adrenaline junkies can try iFly Singapore for indoor skydiving or skyline luge rides through the hills. When you need a beach break, settle into the soft sands at Palawan Beach with its perfect view of southern islands. And no visit to Sentosa is complete without seeing the dazzling Wings of Time nighttime show! This spectacular display of lasers, fire effects, water jets & more will leave you awestruck.

6. Singapore Zoo & River Safari
Animal lovers, rejoice! Singapore is home to one of the world’s best zoos where orangutans swing overhead from vines and pygmy hippos frolic in ponds. Don’t miss their star residents – the adorable giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia. You can also get up close with crocodiles on the riverboat ride through the lush River Safari next door. Here I saw exotic creatures like giant pandas, red pandas, manatees, pink dolphins, and more that call Asia’s rivers home. With so many rare species, these zoos offer an incredible chance to safely view wildlife.

7. Chinatown Street Markets
The bustling bazaars of Chinatown are perfect for market lovers wanting authentic Singaporean shopping adventures. Temple Street and Trengganu Street offPagoda Street overflow with stalls selling everything under the sun. You’ll find bright Chinese slippers next to pungent durian fruit next to gold jewelry and vintage sunglasses. There’s so much nicknack eye candy! And the exciting energy here makes for excellent people watching. Don’t forget to poke your head into traditional Chinese medicine shops filled with strange herbs and exotic animal parts!

8. Orchard Road Shopping
If you love luxury shopping, famous Orchard Road is shopaholic nirvana with over 4,000 retailers spanning 22 malls and department stores. Even if you’re on a budget, window shopping is super fun! Flagship stores for every international brand imagination reside here along with tons of cool local boutiques. Make sure to duck into surreal avant-garde Ion Orchard Mall designed by iconic architect Toyo Ito. But leave some space in your suitcase – there’s amazing shopping beyond Orchard Road too!
